Chinese man makes world's most expensive tea with panda droppings
A 41-year-old Chinese businessman, An Yanshi (安琰石), has been awarded a patent by the Chinese authorities for his proposal to grow tea using panda feces as fertilizer.
Sichuan News reported that the former university lecturer will soon start planting his experimental “panda tea” (熊猫茶) in Ya An Lu Shan tea garden near Chengdu.
World’s most expensive tea
“Panda’s main food is bamboo and bamboo leaves contain anti-cancer elements, so does green tea,” An told Sichuan News, indicating that his “panda tea” would have an anti-cancer function.
An has put a heavy price tag on his first batch of “panda tea,” which is expected to be picked next spring.
Pegged at RMB 219,865 per jin, or US$34,569 per 500 grams, the panda-nurtured tea is 10 times the price of Zhu Ye Qing (竹叶青), currently the world's most expensive tea, reported Chinanews.com.
“Indonesia has Kopi Luwak, the United States has Panda Express, [I] wish netizens can support me to create the world-famous Chinese tea -- Panda Tea,” explained An.
Fancy a cuppa?
An has also sent out an invitation through local media, summoning scientists from around the world to sample his fresh “panda tea” next Spring.
“Panda Tea must be the world’s most expensive tea all the time -- [we] need to let the world know that this kind of tea is nurtured by panda feces,” he said.

An said he will only sell 500 grams of "panda tea" each year, divided into 10 portions of 50 grams each. He considers the tea "a gift from the God."
Rich in resource
A self-proclaimed “environmental panda calligrapher” (we're not sure about the “panda” part), An came across the idea of fertilizing tea with panda feces when a previous business venture failed three years ago.
The independent inventor then taught calligraphy at Sichuan University while working on his “panda tea” proposal.
An has already collected six tons of panda poop in Ya An Lu Shan tea garden and has resigned from Sichuan University to focus on the “panda tea” planting wholeheartedly.

According to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, an adult panda produces 20 kilos of feces per day, and the center deals with more than 200 tons of panda droppings every year.
